in with the art crowd

October 10, 2008  9:44 am

Saturday evening’s monthly roundup of gallery openings on the La Cienaga strip of Culver City in Los Angeles has started to resemble something of a public pilgrimage of late. And it can get thirsty looking at all that art. Fortunately for avid art fans, the Mandrake bar provides the perfect salvation—and not just on weekends; its Wednesday night parties are being talked about as the new hot spot on the West Coast. “When we first opened I tried to create a dance party, but that didn’t really work,” confesses programmer Ezra Woods. Never mind the empty dance floor; Woods’ series of parties based on themes such as goth, Brit pop, and grunge have attracted an impressive turnout. “It’s more of a hang-out party than a dance party,” he says. Those spotted hanging out of late include Chloë Sevigny, Raymond Pettibon, Hedi Slimane, and Takashi Murakami.
