moda lisboa, day one

The world’s economies are in meltdown mode, but you wouldn’t know it at Moda Lisboa, under way this week in Lisbon. The opening day didn’t suffer from a shortage of spectacle. First there was Lili Caneças, a prominent socialite, holding court in the front row of every show in a Pucci dress paired with opaque lime green hose. Then there was the evening’s final show by Alves/Gonçalves, sponsored by Cartier and Giuseppe Zanotti and held in a vast warehouse outfitted with hundreds of Philippe Starck Ghost chairs for guests. Here, an Audrey Hepburn-meets-Versace vibe came together with models in French twists, elegant minidresses, stilettos, and gobs of diamonds. Even the Moda Lisboa main show venue’s graphic black and white design scheme spoke of an early-eighties inspiration. Who knows if the jubilant mood will endure, but still, it’s nice to see one fashion pocket where the mood is one of Dynasty-era glamour, not doom and gloom.
