mumbai shopping: more than just pashminas

Most people think of shopping in Mumbai as an opportunity to stock up on pashminas and ethnic jewelry, but thanks to the efforts of some forward-looking entrepreneurs, the city now boasts a trio of hip style emporiums. The first stop is Bombay Electric, run by Brit-Indian It girl Priya Kishore. She stocks an eclectic selection of India’s best designers, including Lakme fashion week’s resident innovator, Anuj Sharma. Close by is Ensemble, where you can find magical creations from Tarun Tahiliani, who unveiled a collaboration with Levi’s today at LFW. Rounding out this high-end threesome is Muse, owned by jet-setting Tarini Jindal, who carries unexpected creations from emerging star Arjun Saluja alongside designs by Hussein Chalayan. Of course, there are plenty of more traditional stores around if you’re looking to haggle over hippie-chic sandals or silk kurtas, but for those in the market for a well-curated selection of world-class Indian merchandise, these shops can’t be beat.
