paris fashion week: taking shelter in the 20th

One of the most fashionable openings in Paris this season has nothing to do with shopping or clothes. On Thursday night, Dominique Isserman, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and assorted other friends joined Philippe Starck to celebrate the official opening of his latest project, the Mama Shelter hotel. Mama Shelter, which is tucked away in eastern Paris behind the Père-Lachaise cemetery, opened quietly just three weeks ago, but it’s already completely booked. What makes it so cool? The neighborhood, which remains authentically village-y, for one thing. The hotel, on the other hand, has a vibe that is 100 percent urban, with a large common space that encompasses a breakfast area, self-serve library, two bars, a restaurant, custom foosball for eight, a stage for live entertainment, café, and terrace. And the rooms, which offer high design and a touch of whimsy at a price that can’t be beat anywhere in the capital (from 79€ or about $109 per night). Add to that a menu by chef Alain Senderens, cool amenities like electric cars and motorcycles for rent by the day, plus the music venue La Flèche d’Or across the street, and suddenly the 20th doesn’t seem like quite such a schlep anymore.
