she’s no lightweight: sam taylor-wood at white cube

Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Escape Artist” series of self-portraits—part of her Yes I No show opening in London today—shows her slender, slumped frame suspended by colored balloons. Often dismissed as trivial or merely blessed with beauty and a top gallerist husband, Taylor-Wood offers a piercing rebuttal to her catty critics with this image and others from the exhibition, which is split between the White Cube gallery and a space in Covent Garden. Yes I No is Taylor Wood’s first solo show with White Cube since 2004, and in addition to photographs it includes Sigh, a new large-scale film installation. Although Taylor-Wood spearheaded the collaboration between artists and fashion brands when she worked with high-end British department store Selfridges in 2000, Yes I No shows her romantic, sensitive interest in old-fashioned forms of art and entertainment, including Wuthering Heights, the BBC Concert Orchestra, and sad clowns. Despite the lighter-than-air impression created by “Escape Artist,” Yes I No proves Taylor Wood is here to stay.
