Fashion isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when one thinks of Portugal (fresh fish is more like it), so the 31st edition of ModaLisboa was a pleasant surprise. Strong showings came from José António Tenente, whose suite of white evening gowns are great for making a big statement, and Ana Salazar, the grande dame of Lisbon’s designers, who adopted a more arty, though no less elaborate, take, with 3-D textural effects and rich brocades. It remains to be seen how the current financial crisis will affect the retail trade, but for boutiques willing to take chances on new designers, Lisbon offers a slew of commercially viable talent that could attract customers in search of something new to wear.
