The night of November 4, when Senator What’s-His-Name was announced President-Elect, was a momentous occasion for lots of people. But Genevieve Jones, the former girl-about-town accessories designer, was celebrating a slightly different victory. “I was at a friend’s pad watching the election results and got an e-mail from Julia [Restoin-Roitfeld] saying that Kate Moss was carrying my bag, but I couldn’t open the pictures on my iPhone,” Jones recalls. “So I got the hell out of that party and went to my computer.” As various former red states were called blue in the background, Jones hunted every pap site looking for more pics of It bag kingmaker Moss toting her accessories and calling friends and family to celebrate the good news—both the country’s and her own. “My parents told me Obama officially won, but I didn’t know which I was happier about,” Jones deadpans. “I went to bed with the biggest smile ever.” The bag in question is a black leather fringe boho number (pictured here), which found its way into Moss’ closet in a very modern way. “I saw Kate out one night and she told me she liked my bag,” explains Jones. “So the next day I gave her whatever she wanted, with a major discount.” It’s that sort of pluck and luck that has helped spur the one-year-old, Thailand-based Genevieve Jones accessories label, which includes jewelry and handbags, into the big time. (You can see her collections on her newly launched Web site, www.genevieve-jones.com.) “All my girlfriends tote around my bags and wear my jewels, and I love them forever for it,” Jones says. Next up on the celebrity roster? “Lourdes!” says Jones. “She’s the coolest-looking, beautiful young girl!”
