Bruni-Sarkozy Avec Letterman, Lauer

November 19, 2008  10:49 am

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is in town this week doing the talk show circuit. Last night on the Late Show, David Letterman drooled over La Première Femme in the sweetly hilarious way that only he can do, cracking wise about how President Sarkozy ever gets anything done. In spite of the flirtation, the singing First Lady was relegated to performing a song from her newish album Comme Si de Rien N’Etait online only. This morning, on the Today Show, Matt Lauer asked about her husband’s conservatism, her racy lyrics, and her thoughts on soon-to-be American counterpart Michelle Obama. On the lattermost subject, she said, “I’m looking forward to meeting her.… She looks like a great, strong, intelligent woman.” (Lauer restrained any flirtatious inclinations but did make time for her to sing on-air.) When he asked if she had any advice to give the First Lady-Elect on raising young children in the spotlight, Mme Sarkozy deferred to the indomitable Mrs. Obama. “She doesn’t look like she needs advice.… It would be better for me to get advice from her.” When the two inevitably meet, we wonder if they’ll discuss Alaïa.
