Comme And Get It: London Edition

November 13, 2008  12:17 pm

It happened on Saturday in Tokyo. It’s happening right now in New York. And it happened a few hours earlier in London—that is the Kawakubo-crazed throwing up elbows to get their hands on the Comme des Garçons line for H&M. There is something about the Swedish retailer and its collaborations that bring out the inner fishwives in women. London’s debut showed no exception to that rule. By 7:30 a.m., an enormous queue snaked down Regent Street, and as the flagship opened, shoppers turned into a mob, grabbing whatever they could from the collection, regardless of size, color, or shape—showing all the hallmarks of an eBay legend. So good thing then for Katy Perry (in Hello Kitty shoes), Jourdan Dunn, Bond girl Gemma Arterton, and a bunch of other VIPs that the chain thoughtfully held an exclusive party and shopping event last night so the stars could get the pick of the litter first. Certainly Ms. Perry did—and she liked it. “I go to H&M in every country I travel to,” she said as she piled polka-dot cardis, dark trench coats, and the ruffled dress in her shopping bag. “I love this store and I can’t get enough!”
