fashionistas go the distance

November 3, 2008  8:12 pm

Plenty of civilians run the New York Marathon every year, and yesterday was no different. But this year, a whole slew of fashionistas took part, which is shocking, really, if you consider a) the incompatibility of long-distance training and the industry’s out-every-night lifestyle, and b) nylon shorts. Though we suspect that the typically lean runner’s physique (and maybe clotheshorse Katie Holmes’ participation last year?) adds to the allure. At any rate, for social-scene habitués in particular, Sunday represented the culmination of months of sacrifice. “No drinking, no red wine, and a lot of pastas,” said Beth Ostrosky of her preparation, which extended way back to fashion week. “I’ve definitely had less tolerance for standing in high heels for extended periods of time,” noted former Bloomingdale’s buyer Deirdre Maloney, now co-founder of fashion-brand consultancy BPMW. Michael Bastian publicist Eugenia Gonzalez, [pictured here] who abstained from drinking for most of party season, spent Halloween night at home in preparation for the race. Nevertheless, she donned a costume of sorts yesterday: the tricolors of her native Mexico, including a pair of red Bastian short-shorts with white trim. “I totally have to represent my country, and my boss,” she explained. (Battling persistent knee pain, she still valiantly clocked in at 4:33.)

DNR editor Jean Scheidnes (black Brooks shorts, purple singlet, black fleece Asics gloves, Maui Jim sunglasses, and “an orange Nike visor to help my friends spot me”) also stayed in on Halloween, as she has every Friday night since May. As to why she took part: “Katie Holmes has nothing to do with it.”

  2. I give her much respect, because I know it’s hard sometimes to exclude yourself from everything, but at the end it’s all worth it. It is also nice to see that she admires her country, and is uniformed under the same colors. Good luck
