Penelope’s Sphere On Its Way Around The Globe

Given the mixed-up state of international affairs, it’s nice to know that fashion can play a small role in encouraging cross-cultural exchange. Take Georgian-born, Berlin-based designer Tamari Nikoleishvili. The enterprising immigrant arrived in Germany to study design, then worked as an intern for Vivienne Westwood and Marjan Pejoski in London, before setting up shop on her own in Berlin. Her collection, Penelope’s Sphere, available across Europe as well as online at www.penelopes-sphere.com, has a dark romanticism that is rendered primarily in washed and distressed silk and jersey and often accented with hand-drawn prints. Nikoleishvili is part of Berlin’s burgeoning design scene, and for Fall 2009, she’s shooting a film to showcase her collection. It’s an innovative, not to mention cost-cutting, solution that one expects many younger designers will embrace in these tight economic times. Given her talent (and reasonable price points, starting around $200 for a dress), she could be a find for retailers beyond the E.U. looking to boost their roster of unique new names.
