Postcard From Dubai: Donna D’Cruz Reports From Atlantis

November 24, 2008  10:28 am

Last Thursday night was unreservedly iconic. The opening of Atlantis at Palm Jumeirah was filled with elegance, glamour, and a dazzling display of what happens in the crazy collision of East meets West with unbounded imagination, passion, and budget. The evening began with yours truly doing the cocktail set, which was attended by HH Sheikh Maktoum, Michael Jordan, Robert De Niro, Sir Richard Branson, Charlize Theron, Wesley Snipes, Matthew Williamson, Naeem and Ranjana Khan, Tim Jeffries, Jade Jagger, Mary-Kate Olsen, Gerard Butler, Tom Silverman, Janet Jackson, Jermaine Dupri, Mischa Barton, Quincy Jones, Jimmy Jam, Mehmet Oz, Colin Cowie, Stuart Brownstein, Kylie Minogue, Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Trini Woodall, Denise Rich, Lindsay Lohan, Sam Ronson, Ann Dexter-Jones, Elizabeth Saltzman Walker, Julien Macdonald, and of course, our hosts, Sol Kerzner and the very gracious Kerzner family.
The evening’s cuisine was delicious beyond words, thoughtfully created by Nobu Matsuhisa, Santi Santamaria, Michel Rostang, and Giorgio Locatelli. The legendary Arabic singer Nawal El Zoghbi performed during the 2,000-people dinner, followed by an exciting performance by Kylie Minogue and her impressive squad of dancers and singers. With the thunderous background of drummers and dancers, ex-Miss World Priyanka Chopra (seen here with me and Colin Cowie), dressed as a goddess, opened the most stunning AV journey, which was projected again the facade of Atlantis. It told the captivating story of Dubai’s humble beginnings to the partnering of HH Sheikh Maktoum’s historic partnership with Kerzner International to dream and build the $1.5 billion dollar project. The finale was a jaw-dropping 20-minute Grucci fireworks display (pictured here) that simply dwarfed Beijing’s Olympic opening ceremonies. Palm Island was illuminated with fireworks that spread across the entire landscape to brilliantly remind us that we were all sharing a moment in history. We danced until 6 a.m. and realized that as Atlantis rose at Palm Jumeirah Dubai, we had all witnessed an icon in the making. I am thrilled to have been a part of a legendary experience. More, more, more…and beyond fabulous!
