Rodarte Wins Stella; Schwab Passes Baton

Given the apocalyptic retail forecasts, the chance for an up-and-coming designer to win 100,000 euros in the Swiss Textiles/Stella Award was especially exciting this year. (In fact, we bet that some established designers wish they qualified for consideration.) Sister act Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte walked away with the honors last night, after presenting their collection alongside a worthy cast of contenders Richard Nicoll, Louise Goldin, and Jean-Pierre Braganza. While accepting the award, Kate teared up onstage. “It’s just so overwhelming,” she said. Indeed. This year saw the sisters scoop up the CFDA’s Swarovski Award while garnering extensive editorial attention. Last year’s winner, Marios Schwab, was on hand to pass the baton after presenting his stellar Spring 2009 collection. Asked if he had any advice for young designers winning big cash prizes, Schwab offered, “You have to be very careful that you continue your ideals. Certainly, when you don’t have money, creativity is more experimental. My advice is to stay humble and spend [it] on things that will be valuable for the future.”
