stella holds her verdant ground at ACE

November 4, 2008  1:16 pm

When it comes to being green, Stella McCartney means business. At last night’s 12th annual ACE Awards, she would only accept the Accessories Council’s first-ever Green Designer of the Year Award—a Leiber minaudière—if it was, in fact, green. (And we don’t mean the color of its crystals.) The organization and the company obliged, coating rather than plating her evening clutch in stainless steel within a controlled vacuum chamber from which no fumes could escape, and lining it not in leather but black hemp. The plaque was engraved on unplated sterling silver, so it will tarnish, but somehow we don’t think McCartney will mind. “Awards like this encourage other designers to be more responsible,” she said. Perhaps Judith Leiber, for starters?
