Blasblog From London: Motorola’s Right Turn

I’ll be honest: If airfare to a fun destination and meals are included, I’ll go just about anywhere on a press junket. A weekend in Bali for a laundry detergent? An afternoon in Montauk for a flip-flop? Whatever, I’m there. Although I have to say, when the product is convincing, it definitely helps. So I’m happy to repeat from an unusually sunny afternoon in London that Motorola, who brought journalists from all over the world to the St. Martins Lane hotel this week, didn’t disappoint with its newest offering: the Aura. Taking a cue from the company’s earlier successful line of rotating flip phones, the Aura has raised the bar on swiveling mobile communication. The inner workings have Swiss-made bearings, providing for an easy slide; the rounded screen is actually a 52-carat sapphire lens; the camera on the phone provides a more-than-130-DPI-in-print quality resolution; and the screen is the first-ever fully round view screen. It seems I wasn’t the only one impressed by the ultra-fancy—and at a cool $2,000, I mean really fancy—gadgets on the phone. Suzanne Trocme, the editor at large of Wallpaper magazine, who joined a panel discussion with the likes of UN Studio’s Ben Van Berkel to discuss the design pros of this little gadget, said she was happy to see the finished product with the rest of us. “To be honest, I’m relieved that I like the project,” she said of the phone, admitting that, like me, she’s signed on to things before really investigating them. “This one ticks all the boxes.”
