Metalicus, Not Even Close To A Hair Band

Metalicus might sound like the name of a hard rock group fronted by a guy named Lars, but it’s actually an Aussie fashion label currently in town courtesy of Australian Wool Innovation. (AWI certainly isn’t feeling, er, sheepish about the economy. They flew nine designers here for appointments with New York’s fashion pack.) Ironically, there is nothing hard-edged about the line, which grew out of designer Melma Hamersfeld’s experiments with stocking fabric in the early nineties. Metalicus’ lineup consists of stretch basics in synthetics, cotton, and wool, which, like Legos, can be endlessly combined. They sell at Scoop NYC as well as a smattering of little boutiques. Modestly priced, they look comfortable enough to make even the 20-hour flight from Down Under a manageably stylish affair, which is no small feat.
