Michelle in Narciso: Takes Two, Three and Maybe More
January 19, 2009 1:42 pm
Many of fashion’s chattering classes panned Michelle Obama’s election night dress from Narciso Rodriguez’s Spring 2009 collection. But that clearly didn’t deter the soon-to-be First Lady from giving Rodriguez another go. In fact, Rodriguez made two custom pre-inaugural looks for Mrs. Obama—the purple coat she wore to the morning service at Arlington National Cemetery and the look she changed into later on Sunday for the We Are One concert at the Lincoln Memorial—a perfectly coordinated ensemble of camel and black. She paired a camel coat with a black lining over a matching pencil skirt and black beaded silk blouse, and accessorized with sleek black leather gloves, a black scarf, Loree Rodkin earrings and a slim belt. It could be described as millenial Jackie O., striking and stylish with its fuss-free lines yet wholly appropriate. This, of course, begs the question: will it be an all-Narciso inauguration? In many ways he fits the bill quite perfectly as a youngish American designer whose clothes (with, of course, a few exceptions) flatter all figures and generally make such dedicated fans as Rachel Weisz and Claire Danes look tres chic. Will Narciso beat out First Lady-elect favorites Thakoon Panichgul, Jason Wu, and her fellow Chi-towner Maria Pinto? What about big-name designers like Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta who are no doubt gunning for the gig? Which designer do you think Michelle Obama will choose for the big night?

I LOVED the camel and black outfit she wore to the Inauguration Concert. Beautiful.

Personally, I think she will choose Maria Pinto. She seems very loyal to her. If she doesn’t choose Maria Pinto then I think she will choose Narcisco.

I immediately thought of the camel ensemble that Jackie Kennedy wore to the parade at JFK’s inaugural ~ http://www.bloomacious.com/bloomacious/2009/01/jackie-kennedy-in-oleg-cassini-january-1961.html
By bloomacious on 01/19/09 at 7:15 pmI think Mrs. O will wear Maria Pinto for the oath of office ceremony. Perhaps another Narciso number for the Inaugural Ball? I keep thinking of the photograph of Mrs. O in Narciso Rodriguez from the January issue of Vogue. So regal. We’re covering Mrs. O’s every fashion move at Mrs-O.org
