Michelle Watch: Keeping The Faith In Feith

January 21, 2009  4:37 pm

And you thought it was over. WWD reports that Michelle Obama arrived at a morning service at the Washington National Cathedral in a black Tracy Feith dress with a Japanese-style floral print. Though we’re quite familiar with Feith’s magical way with a frock, he’s far from being a household name. But this is turning out to be quite a year for the laidback, surfing designer. His collection for Target bows in May and now he’s earned coveted membership in the First Lady Closet Club. Feith told WWD that he believed Mrs. Obama bought the dress from Ikram, the boutique whose owner Ikram Goldman is a dyed-in-the-wool lover of fashion and the quiet force behind Mrs. O’s smart picks. And the dress? Though yesterday’s Isabel Toledo coat and dress and Jason Wu gown provoked serious debate, this one, in our estimation, is an indisputable success with its classic, Jackie-esque silhouette of boat neck, full skirt, and elbow-length sleeves.

  2. No matter how much debate her wardrobe choices provoke, there’s no denying that they are very original choices and she’ll be a much watched style figure. Props to her for taking risks and being adventurous.

  4. I love the dress - how expensive is it? I noticed she is wearing flat, her feet most be killing her after wearing high hills all day on the 20th!

  5. This one is not my favorite pick for her but, bravo for picking lesser known designers. It’s much easier to play it safe and go with the big names. She has enough confidence to make her own unique choices and we love her for that. As a NYC designer, I love anything that brings much needed media to indie designers!

  9. Anna Wintours’s kind words are kind and just that. The Obama “outfit” in brocade made Michelle look larger than life, hugged her belly and did not fit properly. The dress and especially the coat was too long. The choice of green colored gloves made her hands look alien like. With so many grand choices I wonder why this was chosen? Let’s focus on fit, its so vital to an outfit and stop with the massive florals. One more thing, do not compare Jackie O to Michelle Obama…couture Jackie must be stirring in her grave!
