Park City Dispatch: Celluloid And Sartorial Eco-Chic

Since its commencement last Thursday, the 2009 Sundance Film Festival—as per its 25-year-old indie mission—has continued to showcase an assortment of cutting-edge films. (My faves thus far include Big Fan, a drama about the New York Giants’ biggest fan from the writer of The Wrestler, and Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, an adaption of one of the late David Foster Wallace’s great works and actor John Krasinski’s directorial debut.) However, the most popular subject permeating this year’s selections is, without a doubt, the planet. Films like The Cove, a documentary exposing the horrific systematic slaughter of dolphins in a small town in Japan, have been attracting unexpected buzz. Happily, this eco-conscious trend has trickled down to other realms as well. In an effort to curb the purchase of plastic water bottles, the festival has been giving away nifty (and sporty-looking) green-colored water bottles and encouraging festivalgoers to fill up at the dozens of Brita stations sprinkled throughout Park City. In terms of this eco-friendly trend relating to fashion, there has been a conspicuous absence at the festival of fur. Emily Blunt, pictured here, seems rather toasty in a little wool coat. In fact, despite the freezing temps, Hollywood starlets have been spotted donning their usual designer duds. At a Humane Society dinner I attended on Sunday night, Paris Hilton was sporting nothing but a beaded frock and fishnet tights. Her accessory of choice? A baby seal stuffed animal.
