A Green Bird Lands In Williamsburg

Weather? Frightful. Economy? Still in death spiral. Fashion week? Quickly looming. There are plenty of reasons, in other words, not to go shopping. But there will soon be one solid counterargument to remove the Visa, MasterCard, or AmEx from its lockbox and hop the L train to Brooklyn: On Monday, the new Bird boutique opens in Williamsburg. This third branch of Bird takes up a whole city block on Grand Street, and proprietor Jen Mankins has filled it with apparel from such designers as Yigal Azrouël, Martin Margiela, Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant, Tsumori Chisato, and Thakoon. (Heading to that lockbox yet?) There’s accessories, too, of course, as well as gifts, books, kids’ stuff, and a huge selection of menswear. “Part of the reason I wound up in Williamsburg was that I wanted to find a space where I could house a lot of different elements,” explains Mankins. The size of the new store also inspired her to make the revamp of the former bakery and bread factory Brooklyn’s first LEED-certified renovation. Mankins also puts a green emphasis on the goods housed within, which means you can go shopping and still feel good.
