Head Start With Susan Woo

-------

Fashion week officially kicks off on Friday, but if you’re on the radar for young labels like I am, you’re probably already in deep. Last night Susan Woo showed her very first collection at the Thompson LES hotel, but she’s not new to the industry. Woo logged hours at Louis Vuitton, Derek Lam, and Chanel before launching her eponymous line, and while her past jobs may have helped develop her style, it’s Cornell University—Woo’s agriculture-obsessed alma mater—that’s responsible for her environmentally sustainable line. “I wanted to create clothing that reflected an individual’s personal beliefs,” said Woo. “This brand allows people to really feel good about what people are buying.” Apparently word got out: Julie Gilhart stopped by for a peek, as well as Olivia Palermo, Andrew Saffir, and Maggie Rizer. Will we be seeing Woo’s line at Barneys next season?

With economic downturns comes a bullish market for emerging designers. Happened in 2001; happened in the 70s. One silver lining in this Return to Classic 5.0 (or whatever this recession could be called): today’s emerging designers will be tomorrow’s major fashion houses. Hey, Christian Dior launched his label amidst the ashes of WWII.
