It’s Sushi Post-Show For Elise Overland

Elise Overland has always been a gem-embellished, leather-obsessed, artfully feral kind of gal, so when it came to finding inspiration for her Fall ’09 collection the answer was obvious: sushi. “A friend gave me this intellectual cookbook from Japan,” she explained over drinks at the West Village restaurant Charles, after the show. “At first I thought, ‘What am I supposed to do with this?’” But as Overland went on to explain—as pals Hope Atherton, Neville Wakefield, Zani Gugelmann, and Chiara Clemente tippled nearby while Rachel Zoe ambled in, assistants at her heels—the cookbook eventually caught her fancy. “It’s very de Sade, isn’t it? The way you have to cut into the meat of the fish and expose the flesh in this sensual way,” she mused. “I kept opening the book back up and looking at the pictures. That’s why I had such fish-like girls, this season.” Did Overland ever wind up making any sushi? “No,” she acknowledged. “The directions are in Japanese.”
