Louise Gray Goes It Alone

After three turns on the Fashion East runway, Louise Gray has struck out on her own. On Saturday, a small room at London’s Soho House played host to the designer’s Fall ‘09 collection, and the venue turned out to be an ideal showcase not only for Gray’s clothes, but also for her puckish sensibility. “I think this outfit would be good for groupies,” she noted of her TLC-inspired, mirror-detailed denim getup, shown with a curly sheepskin vest. “I wanted the sheepskin to feel kind of like doll hair,” Gray added, with a giggle. “Creepy, no?” Maybe a little. But the vest and the cut-out sheepskin T-shirt were both big hits with the presentation’s attendees, along with Gray’s dresses and leggings and
multicolored dévoré. (Also a winner: The matching dévoré platforms by Nicholas Kirkwood.) “I started out with the trousers,” Gray explained. “I thought it would be kind of funny to make a pair of trousers so it looked like you’d been painting your legs.” Clearly, Gray takes a lot of inspiration from ideas that tickle her funny bone. “Oh, yeah,” she agreed. “I mean, if I couldn’t laugh when I work, well…I guess I’d just never work.”
