New Kids On The Block: The Unknown (For Now) Designers At The Grammys
February 9, 2009 2:36 pm
Sure, the red carpet glittered at last night’s Grammys with many of the usual suspects—Zuhair Murad, Alberta Ferretti, and Reem Acra, for example—but the real story was the names that had us heading for Google. Katy Perry turned heads in a strapless bubblegum pink confection with elaborate origami-like detail from designer Basil Soda (Paula Abdul also donned a dress by the Lebanese designer, though less successfully); while Brit-import Estelle stole the show from Kanye West in a futuristic frock by Kuala Lampur-based designer Bernard Chandran. Keeping things a little more local was Jordin Sparks, who turned to Arizonan Debra Davenport for her asymmetrical rose-printed gown. Will stylists follow suit and embrace the unknowns for the upcoming Oscars? Stay tuned.

“Will stylists follow suit and embrace the unknowns for the upcoming Oscars?”
Not likely. Nobody wants to be That Dress come Oscar night. There are, after all, Oscar gown rules.
