Recession? Verrier Goes For Spectacular

Catherine Deneuve’s character in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was the inspiration behind Ashleigh Verrier’s most recent collection, shown Saturday night at Bryant Park. “Catherine is 21 years old and kind of sassy in the movie,” explained Verrier. “It’s sort of about a girl becoming a woman. We wanted to capture that, along with some undertones of rock ‘n’ roll. I’ve always done really girly clothes, but it’s not as pretty this season.” Or, as unpretty as Verrier’s überfeminine aesthetic can be. With her one-time Parsons mentor Tim Gunn in the front row, the designer sent out a tweed trench with spiky crystal trim, sleek high-waisted trousers, and skirts with scalloped hems; ruffles and bubble-gum-pink chiffon were also in the mix. “I would say with the economy, if anything, I’ve tried to make pieces even more spectacular,” said Verrier. “If women are going to invest money, they’re not going to get a whole new wardrobe. Maybe they’ll be able to get one special piece, so we really went to town with the embellishment.” Sounds like a stimulus plan we can get behind.
