Yea, Nay, or Eh: Miley Cyrus in Zuhair Murad at the Academy Awards

February 22, 2009  11:53 pm

Listen, we know Ms. Cyrus wrote a song in a nominated cartoon—sorry, animated feature—about a runaway dog or something, but don’t you think that’s an awfully big dress for someone to be wearing who doesn’t really have a reason to be at the Oscars in the first place? There’s just a lot going on with that outfit. You’ve got the tiers, the seashell belt, the jewel encrusting…we mean, the bling goes on. And while Miley pulled of the princess look better than others on the red carpet (ahem, Sarah Jessica), we still think it was a bit over the top. Are we behind the times? Is she totally working it? Do we need to watch more Hannah Montana to get down with it? Tell us.

  1. I think she looks AMAZING! I love the dress

  2. It’s atrocious. A bad pageant gown. But I mean, can we blame her? She’s 15 and Southern.

  3. nay

  4. Despite my immense dislike for Miss Cyrus, I must say that I loved this dress and did not feel it to be at all out of place. That being said, the belt, while a step in the right direction, just didn’t do it for me…

  5. she’s 15!! if i were 15 that’s about the exact dress i’d want to wear. (hell, at 30 i’d want to wear it too but i know better). i think it’s great. in fact i’m a bit sick of teenagers looking like senior citizens on the red carpet (paging taylor momsen) so this is quite refreshing.

  6. No, you don’t… Miley obviously got her gown from some low budget Arabbian production of broadway “worked up” by a sewing auntie or something like that. Move over, Miley, we can’t see the people properly dressed behind you.

  7. no. you are exactly right. only Ms. Cruz pulled off the princess thing (if you want to put her dress in that category). Miley and SJP were inappropriate and ridiculous.

  8. Awfully too much!!!

  9. I think it was too much dress for such a young girl, while the dress was beautiful, to me it didnt fit right for her at all and personally I think shows far too much cleavage for a girl her age. I think this dress would be much more elegant on someone a few years older than her.

  10. So, what is a 15 years old supposed to show up in for their first Oscar nomination? Some gray fold like Streep or Swindon? Seriously, now! She’s perfect.
And hardly stole the dress show (Tomei did that, hasn’t she…)

By NotMod on 02/23/09 at 8:03 am
  11. way, way too much. Yes, she’s fifteen–but doesn’t that mean she should be wearing something, you know, *youthful*?

By theoutsider on 02/23/09 at 9:57 am
  12. i caught the end of her being interviewed on the red carpet last night and only saw the top part of the dress and i thought “oh wow that is beautiful… she looks like she’s finally wearing something youthful! what does the rest of it look like??” and now after seeing it, i do think it is a bit much. i also said to myself “what is she doing there so dressed up?? she wasn’t in any movies…” so i guess she did a song and she is a celeb so i get why she is there. but since she was not a player in any awards, i think it looks a bit over the top. the dress is beautiful. would have worked better for her in this situation minus the bow on the belt and if the skirt part of the dress was not tiered and huge… perhaps if it were a straight cut it would have been better. i think meryl streep’s daughter hit the nail on the head with her subdued, simple yet beautiful and classic look.

  14. HORRIBLE! =(

  15. I just hate the fact that this is CLEARLY a knock-off of a 1949 vintage dior gown, called “Junon.”

  16. I think the dress is stunning though I am not a fan AT ALL of the wearer. Interesting about it looking like a Christian Dior copy - thanks for posting about that!

    By medusa242 on 02/23/09 at 12:20 pm
  17. it would be great for Miley to stop dressing as though she’s 50. in my opinion, of course.

By wearmoa on 02/23/09 at 2:12 pm
  18. i think she actually looked great! it was age appropriate and i loved the layers of fabric. if rihanna had worn the same thing, we’d all be loving it.

By nanaekua on 02/23/09 at 2:14 pm
  19. i have to give it a no…just a little too costumey and too much fabric for her small frame to carry well. a simple silhouette in a stronger color would have served her better.

By kerileanne on 02/23/09 at 3:02 pm
  20. I completely agree. Yes it is an eye-catching dress, (not necessarily all bad) that seems to make too bold a statement for someone who only wrote a song for the film.
I don’t think that she doesn’t have a right to there because she did participate in it, however I think it would be more suitable to go for something simpler that conveys more of the idea of subtle, understated elegance. Is that just me?

    By kouda_mika on 02/23/09 at 3:53 pm
  21. Miley Cyrus in… The Nutcracker! Or maybe as a Disney princess would be more appropriate. Then again, I thought a poofy parakeet-blue glittery number was a good idea when I was her age…

By countthezeros on 02/23/09 at 9:22 pm
  22. Totally wrong dress, wrong place!
It is an old fashioned dress that looks more like you’d pick for Halloween or better yet, for Roseball and way too much glitter. In other words, dress looks cheap and totally wrong!Who wears sea shells nowadays?

By Aydanm on 02/24/09 at 9:53 am
  23. I like the dress itself, the top is a very nice cut. And the sparkle gives it a nice texture and shine. But i remember seeing it on the red carpet and saying to myself that she could not handle that much dress. i think its not for her.

    By devman7 on 02/24/09 at 10:49 am
  24. Too overwhelming .. she should really be wearing something much more simple and chic!

  26. she is to short for this dress.murad has many other dresses that are more suitable for her short-fat body and face type

By maroulourida on 11/4/09 at 5:57 am
  27. Miley looks beautiful. I just think that she should take of some if the bling and shorten the dress.

    By rockstar319 on 02/18/10 at 11:53 am
  28. i want to love it, but the belt ruins it for me.
