Binns’ Clever Cut-And-Paste Job

March 7, 2009  11:25 am

Tom Binns, the unofficial crown jeweler to America’s new First Lady, has come up with a unique kind of recession special. His latest collection, called “Get Real” and bowing in the windows of Colette in Paris, is made from photographs of rings, necklaces, earrings, and watches ripped from glossy magazines. Binns reassembles them in his inimitably zany style and then laminates them in plastic for durability. “Now you can get your diamonds, emeralds, and shit,” says the famously plain-spoken Irish-born designer. Safety pin closures add to the punk rock vibe, as do the $125 price tags. The jewelry arrives at Colette tomorrow.
