Fashion, Art Still Playing Quite Nicely

Admit it, fashion and art collabs were starting to make your eyes glaze over just a smidge. But Richard Chai’s joint effort with artist Ben Jones, the object of celebration (along with Chai’s menswear debut) last night on Barneys’ fifth floor, is proof that the conceit still has some life. “It’s not my first [collaboration], but it’s the first one I like,” Jones explained of the stripey tee with a logolike embroidery that renders his dog into Day-Glo abstraction. The mustachioed artist held court in a little cluster of gallerists including Deitch Projects directors Kathy Grayson and Nicola Vassell, the proud mama who linked Chai and Jones. “I love it,” said Vassell. “There aren’t enough of these. Artists are really eager to do this kind of project, and fashion provides the best kinship.” As for other candidates she might like to see cozy up to the fashion world: Aurel Schmidt and Terence Koh. Though isn’t Koh, a wearer of Gareth Pugh and self-described “Naomi Campbell of the art world,” a living and breathing fashion/art hybrid? “True,” replied Vassell. “But I would love to see that in actual product.” There could have been another collab born last night as the room was thick with designers out to support Chai: Phillip Lim, Robert Geller and wife Ana Lerario, Albertus Swanepoel, and Alejandro Ingelmo. We’ll be watching.

Just some small words Art and Fashion are simular to each other. Designers are the artists of creating a wonderfull piece of clothing/dress or whatever and the painters/sculptures creating their own world. It’s all the same, creative minds feels the spirit of each other and the world around them, they only interpreted it on their own way. Arriverderci
