Hannah Marshall Studies Bugs

March 2, 2009  2:24 pm

“I used to work for Jonathan Saunders,” comments designer Hannah Marshall. “I think it’s possible I burned out on color.” That’s one explanation for the all-black palette of Marshall’s Fall ‘09 collection. A better one may be that Marshall simply excels at gothic glamour. Marshall launched her brand for Fall ‘07 with a collection of angular little black dresses, and this season, presenting as part of London Fashion Week’s On/Off program, she returned to that theme, sending out a range of body-con L.B.D.’s with paneling and textural details inspired by insect exoskeletons. “I was interested in the idea of protection and armor,” Marshall explained of her collection, which also includes braces made of stingray and snakeskin and a standout lambskin coat that looks for all the world like fur. Another inspiration for Marshall? Ipso Facto, London’s all-girl buzz band, who turned out at Marshall’s show at the Science Museum to provide the soundtrack, live.
