Tila March Launches Shoes, A Different Kind Of March Madness Ensues

According to Tamara Taichman, simplicity is the new statement. And Taichman should know: The French fashion editor is also the mind behind Tila March, the low-key line of handbags that’s earned a feverish following since its 2006 debut at Colette and Printemps. The label’s fans, among them Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst, will no doubt be making a beeline for the new Tila March shoes: The debut collection for Spring, produced by Castañer, comprises the kind of timelessly stylish cork and espadrille-soled wedges that girls turn to when being on-trend starts to feel like a drag. “I’m not trying to be of-the-moment,” notes Taichman, who opens her first boutique in Tokyo this week. “For me, Tila March is more about a sensibility. The shoes, like the bags, are for women who want things that are versatile. Not super-basic,” she adds, “but not overdesigned, either.” As Taichman goes on to note, her philosophy boils down to “what works?” and she’s expanding on that theme for Fall, introducing flats, pumps, and boots with an unassuming je ne sais quoi. “Everything is quite soft,” she says of the new styles. “A lot of suede in autumn colors like brick, dark green, and grape. No black, no metallics, no studs. There’s plenty of ‘edgy’ out there already. I’m trying to do something else.”
