Carlos Falchi: Made In The USA

April 23, 2009  2:03 pm

Carlos Falchi is celebrating 30 years in business with an installation of archival pieces at Bergdorf Goodman, a Fifth Avenue window, and a small collection of New York-inspired handbags for sale at the store. Not bad for a man who says that his career came as a “total surprise.” Born in Brazil, Falchi studied accounting and worked for the post office designing stamps before moving to the Big Apple, where he landed a job at Max’s Kansas City, which, you might say, was a pretty good spot for networking. Three decades on, one of the most distinctive characteristics of Falchi’s work is that it is still made by hand in his Design & Development Lab on 39th Street. “This could only happen in America,” Falchi says. The designer can help make your dreams come true, too. This afternoon, Falchi will be at Bergdorf’s helping customers choose skins and place custom orders on his bags. See you in line.
