For Borba Margo, The Extras Are Everything

April 13, 2009  4:15 pm

The age of excess is over. That’s the conventional wisdom, anyway—but Borba Margo designers Anderson Borba DaSilva and Jessika Margo Goransson see things a little differently. For their Fall collection, the London-based duo have worked up accessories adorned to the point of absurdity—a suede satchel, for example, features no fewer than 14 tassels, and a broad faux croc belt is covered in various buckles, while another handbag seems to be made entirely of ruffle. All this is executed with a telling discipline, both formal and intellectual; not for nothing has Borba Margo landed the British Fashion Council’s prestigious New Generation Sponsorship four times, or found a place for its goods on the counters of shops such as Harvey Nichols and Colette. “We succumbed to our yearning for escapism,” explains Goransson of the impulse behind Borba Margo’s extravagant embellishment. The former womenswear designers have also elaborated on their sculptural aesthetic by designing accessories that, as Goransson puts it, “flirt with the idea of being a garment.” To wit: a leather belt skirted on either hip, and another one made of one continuous organza ruffle. “Our design process is similar to that of clothing design,” Goransson notes. “That’s our background, and the result is experimental pieces that make the accessory the focus of any look.”
