Is One Sleeve Better Than Two?

April 8, 2009  5:42 pm

Designers found lots of ways to work cost-effectively this season, but none was more eye-catching than the single-sleeve look. “It’s a bit playful,” Henry Holland said of the style. “A strong shoulder on the other side balances it out.” The silhouette, which also showed up at Akris, Givenchy, and Michael Kors, among other runways, is an evolution of trendy off-the-shoulder dressing. Depending on your point of view, it either plays on the notion of reveal/conceal or makes the wearer look like she forgot an important part of her ensemble on her way out the door. What’s your take on the trend? Click for a slideshow and tell us.

  2. I love the Michael Kors dress but other than that I do not like this trend.
It feels like I ran out of fabric and finish the dress any way.

I also feel like I seen this trend before. I will have to research that part.

  4. This is a very popular trend right now. I think it gives a sheek toughness to a piece. The one sleeve look has my vote!

  5. This seems impractical. A person can’t very well show up at the office missing a sleeve and expect to be taken seriously. Yet it’s not what one would call an elegant look for evening either. It’s a bit like toeless boots- chic, perhaps, but where to wear?

  6. I like my style to have balance. Even though I’m open minded to new views.I feel the sleeved arm will always look shorter than the other.Leaving this look unbalanced.Regardless to what the shoulder on the other side looks like.
Maybe if the picture showed a different dress style. While maintaining the same idea, I would feel differently? =/

  8. Depending on the design, it can appear either awkward or elegant. I much prefer the look for evening wear as opposed to suits and dresses for day or office.

For evening, the sleeve should be flowing and not too structured to achieve a glamorous look. It can work with various lengths.

I’m curious to see how long the trend will last. Two years possibly? The trend will most likely be dead by the time Gap or J.Crew copies it.

I’ll be keeping an eye out on the party pictures to see which celebrities and socialites sport the look.

  9. This trend won’t last long. Yes, I think it’s gorgeous on certain designs, but it doesn’t seem functional. To me, if my outfit isn’t stylish AND functional, it’s not worth wearing.

  12. I like this style, it’s already said it’s playful and it can be flattering some woman. On the otherhand it would be probably better when you can zip on the other side of the dress also a sleeve. In that case you have a two sleeve dress. One dress with two different kind of to wear these designs, arriverderci.

  14. That dress is a fantastic work of art, and somewhat unique in it’s design, but it’s not the first one sleeve I’ve seen. This outfit is a conversation piece, and would work for those wanting to make a fashion statement. And that’s what its all about these days…both on and off the runway.

  15. I like the look. And proud owner of said trend, before it became a trend.

  16. I like the Jil Sander look, but otherwise not really feeling it. I think I like the Sander because both shoulders are covered, so its more just two very different length sleeves. I always see the bare arm and think, poor cold arm! Maybe a shawl for the bare arm would help.

  17. i think it makes a statement!

  19. I think it’s all about proportions. I prefer the one short sleeve way. One long sleeve looks like they have forgotten to finish the dress.

  20. Nice but since it’s getting warmer out. cut off the other sleeve. And maybe criss cross around the breast area to make it I little more sexy and dressy. And maybe bring back the fish net hose to make it sexy.

  21. It is beautiful. It makes the average person stop and look to form an opinion. Isn’t that what good fashion is? After all, having good style is a form of art. This look pushes the common off-the-shoulder ensemble to another level that could only be fashionable on those who can achieve it with class.

  22. I think the one sleeve look can really look great if it’s done well (in my opinion, Tom Ford did it best with collections such as his Spring 2000, Fall 2003 and Fall 2004, where the single sleeve was “tied in” with other detailing that made it “click”), but I think that if all that’s offered is an otherwise orthodox looking gown, dress, or sweater with what looks like one sleeve missing, it can look a little ridiculous and unfinished.

  23. I think if you are going to go with one sleeve fashion it looks alot better if you wear it with a dress instead of with a one sleeved shirt and pants.

  24. I think the look is very trendy. It gives an outfit that extra edge.
