It’s Open! News From Topshop’s (Very Long) Front Line
April 2, 2009 2:15 pm

I just got back from shooting Style.com’s video of the Topshop opening this morning. The line wasn’t too long when we got there at 9 a.m., and the first people in line had only been waiting since 6 a.m. I sort of wanted to see sleeping bags but, hey, we’re in a recession. (I’m not sure what that means, but I like to blame everything on the R-Monster.) Not surprisingly, the line was young and too-cool-for-school, sometimes too cool to be interviewed. (Their loss!) There was a crazy group of girls from London who had flown in just for the opening, but then there was a guy who lived around the corner and decided to get in line while walking his pug. Sir Philip Green was across the street standing in front of Yellow Rat Bastard, just surveying the scene and chatting on the phone. We went in right before the store opened. By that point, the line curved around the corner to Crosby Street. Inside, Sir Philip gave the staff a pep talk—and asked them to keep things under control and take care of the customers. A nice touch, I thought. Kate Moss was wearing her own Topshop emerald green gown with a little leather jacket and was biting her nails like crazy before the ribbon cutting. But apparently she sashayed outside like the pro that she is. They were letting people inside in shifts, so I didn’t see any crowding or hair-pulling. I bought two little printed Kate Moss dresses—without trying them on, but I’m sure I’ll be back to have a more leisurely shop. Be sure to check out our video coverage of the opening tomorrow.
