L.A. Art Weekend Wrap-Up

Nobody walks in L.A. That’s how the Missing Persons song goes, anyway—but then again, back in 1982 when the band recorded “Walking in L.A.,” there was no such thing as L.A. Art Weekend. This year, the event produced by local art organization For Your Art (in collaboration with fashion industry familiars Black Frame) was all about getting on your feet. The weekend kicked off early—on Thursday—with a walk-through of Elliott Hundley’s new Hekabe-themed show at Regen Projects, with the artist himself playing tour guide. A highlight of the Friday schedule was a Culver City gallery walk; on Saturday, early risers could join the folks from the Los Angeles Conservancy for an “Evolving Skyline Walking Tour” of downtown. And if you wanted to give your feet a rest and consider the city’s walkability in theory, you could head over to Postopolis! LA, the blogger-hosted, Storefront for Art and Architecture-sponsored series of panels, talks, and presentations on the general theme of urbanism. Meanwhile, Laura and Kate Mulleavy had some arty suggestions of their own. On Thursday evening, after wrapping up their Hammer Museum Q&A with Mike Mills, the Rodarte designers joined the artist/graphic designer/director and his soon-to-be-bride (for whom they are designing a wedding dress, according to WWD), Miranda July, at the official launch party for L.A. Art Weekend at the Standard Hotel in Hollywood. As well as saying she and her sister were looking forward to catching the Hundley show, at some point, Kate spilled the beans on a few secret addresses. “Laura and I love Watts Towers,” said Kate, referring to the 17 structures built by an Italian immigrant construction worker over a period of 33 years, “and we love watching films at the Hollywood Cemetery, and Caravan bookstore downtown, and the gem room at the Natural History Museum, and the La Brea Tar Pits, and LACMA…” And as of today, you can add a trip to Brentwood to that list: Monocle publisher Tyler Brûlé is opening up a Monocle pop-up shop in the neighborhood, which has lately emerged as a dark horse spot for cool retail. Long story short: Good thing the price of gas is low. After all, nobody walks in L.A.
