Rachel Roy Doubles Down

April 30, 2009  12:12 pm

Leave it to Rachel Roy to create a diffusion line equally appealing to polished devotees of her eponymous line and the fast-fashion fans who queue up outside Topshop and H&M. The designer debuted Rachel by Rachel Roy last night, a full line of clothing and accessories exclusive to Macy’s that will retail for around $50 to $250. There were versions of Roy staples like hammered silk jumpsuits and throw-on-and-go dresses, but other pieces—a faux-fur paint-splattered miniskirt, for one—were more playful. “I’m not going to put an age on it,” Roy said, “but I was definitely thinking about an effortless, cool, sexy young girl.” Graffiti-print pochettes and ankle boots, patent leather brogues, and tough spiked necklaces round out the collection. Should we expect a new addition to the fashion week schedule anytime soon? Doubtful. “For me the runway is about art and expression, not necessarily everyday clothes. This collection I just want people to wear.”
