Smith & Butler’s Excellent Adventure

Used to be you had to coax the trendsetters across the bridge to Brooklyn. Seems like the tables have turned. For six weeks, Moscot on Manhattan’s Orchard Street will be hosting a pop-up shop for Smith & Butler, the Carroll Gardens boutique. While the eyewear outpost is less than a decade shy of turning 100, the latter is barely six months old. For those of you who aren’t yet familiar with Smith & Butler, it’s the second child of shop owner Marylynn Piotrowski, her firstborn being Tauk in Montauk. Inspired by American biker chic and a military/workwear aesthetic, she stocks wares by Filson, Pointer, and Pendleton. We can almost hear the collective groan about Americana overload, but just keep reading. Piotrowski has sourced clothing and accessories for men and women that you don’t need recession goggles to appreciate, although the striped naval T-shirts from St. James and dead-stock gas attendant shirts do come in under $60. “This isn’t fashion,” she explained. “This is affordable clothing for artists, and if they want it to be fashion, they can interpret it that way.” Sounds like she’s on to something. We spotted photographer Ben Watts playing around with different Moscot frames.
