Vikram Chatwal’s Dream Comes True

Tourism is one industry hurting as badly as fashion, but in India, happily, business is still booming. Take Vikram Chatwal’s next Dream Hotel, in the lush city of Cochin in the state of Kerala, opening this weekend with one of Chatwal’s trademark over-the-top fêtes. It would be hard to best his week-long, multi-city wedding festivities, but the glamorous event promises plenty of boldface names including Bollywood stars, the cream of Indian society, and some familiar names on the New York party scene, like Jade Jagger and Elise Øverland, all of whom will descend for a weekend of full-on fun, culminating in an 800-person gala on Sunday night. The hotel is a budget-conscious traveler’s, well, dream, with standard rooms clocking in at a reasonable $218. For that price you get all the perks you’d expect of a more expensive property—stunning rooftop pool lounge, organic seafood, and traditional ayurvedic massages. And then, best of all, here’s the exotic, unspoiled beach a short hop, skimp, and jump away. Cochin is one of India’s lesser-known treasures, but with the opening of the Dream, it’s only a matter of time before others catch on.
