Blasblog: Life’s A Beach At Bergdorf’s

May 8, 2009  12:16 pm

The ocean was on people’s minds last night at the Bergdorf Goodman men’s store on Fifth Avenue. And not just because a week’s worth of rain finally let up, or because Michael Bastian’s collection of beach-y summer clothing was on the mannequins and the images from Matt Albiani’s new book Lifeguard on Duty were on display. No, people were thinking swimsuits because the third-floor party was as hot as July. “This is like a fifties swimsuit under here,” Bastian’s publicist Eugenia Gonzalez Ruiz-Olloqui explained, tugging on a floral strap that was exposed under her mini muumuu (I have never wanted to do drag in my life, but I would’ve killed someone for a cotton caftan at that moment). As the designer’s sweaty posse fanned out into other parts of the store, Bastian explained that the event came together by accident: Lifeguards were a major reference point for his Spring line, but he had no idea that Albiani had spent three years putting together a book chronicling the looks of CPR-trained beach hunks. A friend introduced them recently, and they thought it was mutually beneficial to team up. Turns out it was quite a happy coincidence: “This has been my best-selling collection ever,” said Bastian, who will hit L.A. with Albiani later this month. “So I’m either going to have to do lifeguards again next season, or follow Matt around and see what book he’s doing next.”
