What: Well Red
Why: Black may have been a big story on the Fall ‘09 runways, but behind the scenes, another color has been making a play for the season’s must-have status. Red is all over the showrooms right now, and as I’ve made my way from market appointment to market appointment, that’s the color of the stuff I keep reaching for first. Red T-shirts, red bags, red sweaters, red shoes. If I were a different sort of woman—richer, more sophisticated—I’d have Lanvin’s crimson suit on preorder. As it is, though, I’m letting Rebecca Minkoff get the red out for me: Her silk princess-seamed, ruffle-backed dress drills a Lanvin-esque elegance down to something suitable for (almost) every day. And though it comes in black, too, something about red feels really correct for this downbeat moment: confident and unapologetic.
