On The Road With Hester

Greetings, Style.com! This is Tasha Green and Mauricio Quezada, the designers of Hester, with a postcard from the road. Whoever thinks American fashion lives solely in the streets of New York has never tested the wild frontiers of our expansive country. Knowing full well that Hester girls exist beyond our beloved metropolis, we set out on this road-trip adventure to find them. Our first stop: Mario’s in Seattle and Portland, where we were graciously hosted for two days of trunk shows. Mario—a kind and dapper man—presides over the Pacific Northwest’s most luxurious boutiques. His stores are elegant and edited to perfection, and his customer, though well versed in fashion, puts a premium on individual style. Having invented grunge, his Seattle customers understood our “future-vintage” concept right away: “Your collection is very smart,” one super-chic professional who swooped up our workhorse of a shift dress remarked. Why, thank you. Hester says that one’s clothes should always be as sharp as her wits. The next day we were in Portland, the greenest city on the planet (New Yorkers may be tough, but Portlanders recycle), where it was an 80-degree scorcher. One Portland girl-about-town went straight for our Italian silk brocade strapless number with vinyl insets—guess she wanted it even hotter. Eventually she called in her entire social circuit for reinforcement, and then there was Champagne, a whirl through the dressing rooms, and more happy customers! Next up: a scenic drive down California’s Pacific Coast Highway before a pit stop with our fave stockist in L.A., Satine.
