Ana Lerario Makes Us Reconsider Brocade

Many is the season in my fashion career that I’ve sat through a round of Fall/Winter shows dutifully jotting down “brocade” as a trend in my trusty Moleskine. And while the looks in question have certainly been chic, aside from an Oscar de la Renta party dress for which I’ve made an exception, the fabric just isn’t something I easily envision in my own closet—until now, that is. For her first full Lerario Beatriz Resort collection, Ana Lerario sourced the magical hybrid of cotton brocade in her native Brazil. “It wasn’t easy to find,” deadpans the soft-spoken designer. Lerario’s breezy, pale lilac-hued version of the traditionally stiff embroidered silk also dovetails neatly with her perennial love of the 1800’s and her signature subtle corset motifs on fitted little jackets. She cuts the sweetness with a dark navy piping, and knocks out any remaining stuffing by pairing, say, a high-waisted cotton brocade skirt with a light-as-air cotton top embellished with razored pleats and copper sequins. Et voilà: A fabric is reborn. For more on the Resort 2010 collections, click here.
