Look Into The Light: How The Mulleavys Kept Their Cool

June 16, 2009  1:31 am

For not having prepared a speech, Womenswear Designer winners Kate and Laura Mulleavy made it through their acceptance speech with an admirable degree of composure. “We thought about things beforehand, but I was pretty sure we wouldn’t win, so I wasn’t feeling too nervous the whole night,” said Kate backstage. “But when they called our names, I was really surprised.” The sisters explained that it was the blindingly bright stage that actually helped keep their cool. “They have so many lights in your face that you can’t see anyone,” added Laura. Meanwhile, one of their biggest fans, Kirsten Dunst, found her way backstage and could barely contain her excitement as the duo finished off their interviews. (She later told them: “It’s like you won Best Picture and Best Director.”) And there was a bit of a mutual admiration society between Lifetime Achievement Honoree Anna Sui and the sister act. Sui, who owns a few Rodarte knits, said she was most excited to see them and they returned the fashion love. “We’ve been obsessed with Anna Sui,” said Kate. “She’s created her own world.”
