500 Days of Summer-Loving

July 10, 2009  12:59 pm

At long last, June’s storm clouds have parted, the beach towels have been spread, and we even detect love in the air. The timing couldn’t have been better for last night’s Cinema Society screening of 500 Days of Summer, a whip-smart romantic comedy (yes, we just used “whip-smart” and “romantic comedy” in the same phrase). The title refers not to the season but to a blue-eyed heartbreaker played by Zooey Deschanel, and the chunk of time that a young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) spends helplessly hung up on her. Some guests at the Tribeca Grand screening (which was co-hosted by Brooks Brothers and Cotton Inc.) were thinking more of the fun-in-the-sun summer connotation, however. Jason Wu was fretting he’d lose the glow he just got in Turks and Caicos, while Hilary Rhoda was lamenting her failure to apply sunscreen (”I wasn’t paying attention!”) for tennis in Westchester earlier in the day. Deschanel, slated to introduce the screening, had to cancel last minute to take a film role in Ireland. But supporting cast member Geoffrey Arend was there with fiancée (and Mad Men bombshell) Christina Hendricks. The couple was very much in the spirit of things. “We’re here in New York planning our wedding,” Hendricks said. “What’s more romantic than that?”
