First Look: Jeffrey Chow For Poleci

July 31, 2009  10:12 am

“We just didn’t have the money,” explained Jeffrey Chow yesterday while showing his first collection for sportswear label Poleci. Chow, you’ll recall, had a strong four-season run as a young designer with both critical and retail support and even an Ecco Domani Award before closing in 2005. He spent the intervening years as a jobbing designer for labels like Lilly Pulitzer and Diane von Furstenberg. The Poleci appointment actually came via Doo-Ri Chung, a longtime friend. Poleci and Doo.Ri are both owned by Tharanco and overseen by fashion executive Jean Claude Huon. “We didn’t look for any other designers,” said Huon. “We just met Jeffrey and said, ‘OK.’” Chow sees his role as refining Poleci’s DNA of clean silhouettes and techno fabrics. “Normally I would be theme-y, like Visconti or something,” said Chow. “This isn’t like that. It’s much more lifestyle.” The strongest pieces in the pre-spring launch were the simplest. An ultra-clean draped-neck shift in a high-tech twill that will retail for $315 (!) got “oohs” and “aahs” from all present. That came from the tailored half of the collection, which included schoolboy jackets and carrot-shaped trousers. The counterpoint was more classic resort in acid hues and prints. Chow didn’t offer many details on Spring 2010, to be shown in a presentation on September 12. “I’m still adding things,” he said. “It’s still coming together.”

  1. It’s brave of them in this difficult time to make a new sportswear collection. The price tag is very low so a lot of people (I think) can afford it. The clothes in the pic you showed us is very wearable. For sportswear fans it’s an different look on what people should wear. Yeah I like this ‘collection’
