Giambattista Valli On His New Deal

As was reported last week by WWD, Giambattista Valli signed with the Mariella Burani Fashion Group, after ending a five-year licensing relationship with Gilmar Group. So what does this mean for Valli girls the world over? Well, for starters, more of the clothes that they love. “The collection is going to grow,” Valli told us yesterday on the phone from Paris. “I want to be known for all the parts of the wardrobe, not just the cocktail and evening dresses.” Though WWD mentioned accessories collections, Valli stressed that there’s as yet nothing concrete to report yet on the bag or jewelry front. “[Burani] is the largest fashion group in Italy,” he explained. “They do all these different categories so there’s a very large potential. I don’t know if I’m doing [accessories] or not, but there’s now the possibility.” There could also be special collections, he mentioned, like a capsule of his signature jersey dresses. Another shift for Valli is a stronger presence in New York, spending more time here and establishing his own showroom and offices, perhaps in West Chelsea. (He wouldn’t say whether showing in the city was an option, relenting with a “Never say never.”) Although another priority of Valli’s is to do an extensive enough collection to be able to address the various concerns of his ever-growing global clientele, who currently range from the U.S. to the Middle and Far East—”Japan is different from China is different from Dubai is different from Texas is different from Chicago,” he rattled off. “I listen to my customers and to their needs. It’s very important. I think in the past some designers forgot that a woman has to wear their clothes.”

Good choice of him, and I wish him all the succes and above all credits for his work. He did a splendid job in the past so I assume that he goes on the way he always does.
