The Dead Weather Report

July 17, 2009  10:02 am

I told Alison Mosshart, the raven-haired songstress currently on tour with Jack White and their musical collaboration the Dead Weather, that if she comped me some backstage passes to her gig last night I would come dressed as her: tight dark jeans, gold Dior Homme boots, black wig, and a baggy cardigan. Well, she came through with the tickets, but I only met her halfway—just the baggy cardigan. Not that the fashion quotient was at all low. Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez, model Jessica Stam, art girl Amy Greenspon, and Chanel favorite Jen Brill were all there in their backstage best. (Think: denim cutoffs, messy hair, and disheveled headgear.) The performance itself was great, a sold-out and packed crowd—including the full Mosshart clan up from Florida: Mom, Dad, and brother Matthew—at Midtown’s Terminal 5, all of whom seemed pretty impressed. “He’s like a blur,” Brill said of White’s drumming. “Pretty sexy.” I concurred in both the case of the drumming and in a sweaty, writhing Mosshart. Brill wasn’t the only one who deemed the gig sexy, though some were into kinkier things. When I followed Mosshart, who also doubles as one half of the Kills with Jamie Hince, out of the venue, one overzealous fan asked her to sign a poster of herself, and then to put a cigarette out on his arm. I’m all for a souvenir from a great night, but nothing permanently scarring, please. For a good concert, and presumably, the potential of chic wounds, the band is performing again tonight at the same venue. Tickets were available this morning.

  2. I love this new band. Am I crazy in thinking that Meg White and Alison Mosshart look alike?

  3. They look alike, but they’re so different at the same time. Didn’t Meg just get married?
