My birthday is in April, and though I like to think I have loads of friends in this town, every year about when February rolls around I start to wonder whether or not I’m popular enough to have a party. Will people come, or will I be there alone in a funny hat crying into an empty bottle of rosé? Last night, at Saks Fifth Avenue’s Manhattan flagship, it became very clear to me that the fine folks at
Calvin Klein have never asked themselves such a silly question. (Silly for them; the verdict is still out on whether or not I’ll ever have a good bday.) This was the summer of Calvin Klein parties. Since June, I’ve found myself celebrating one of American fashion’s most quintessential brands in three different places: First it was the ACRIA fête in the Hamptons, in July there was a dinner in Paris during the Couture shows, and just last night, Francisco Costa and his pretty co-hosts Alexa Chung,
Kathryn Neale Shaffer, Jessica Joffe, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Elettra Wiedemann were at Saks toasting the new Calvin Klein Collection women’s shop. It sounds like a lot, right? But nobody was complaining. “Are you kidding? I was just glad something was happening this month,” said recent Manhattan transplant Melissa George. “I was really looking forward to getting dressed up and being social.” Speaking of dressing up, Chung’s long-sleeve knit minidress was too short to be deemed chaste, but too hot for the summer weather. “I never get it right,” she joked. Others, however, begged to differ.
