What They’ll Be Wearing in Los Angeles This Fall

In our ongoing exploration of fall’s must-buys, we head to L.A.—Los Feliz, to be precise. With partners Danny Masterson and Aly Mawji, Ilaria Urbinati—stylist and former head buyer at Satine and Milk—opened Confederacy to much hype in 2008. In addition to menswear, they feature a well-curated collection of contemporary women’s labels like Rag & Bone, Opening Ceremony, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Good news for New York transplants: Their mini-café is up and running, featuring fair-trade brews from Williamsburg fave Gimme Coffee.
Any items with wait lists?

IU: The Proenza Schouler ankle boot with wooden heel, rug print, and leather—they’re insane and we keep getting calls about them! Also the Rebecca Minkoff Darling hobo in purple haze—ever since Ashley Greene was photographed wearing it before it even came out it’s been crazy.
What do you anticipate will be your biggest sellers?

IU: All Alexander Wang always kills it. It’s just what girls want to wear right now. We’re already getting a lot of requests for the biker short. Boy by Band of Outsiders is also selling out already and it just arrived—the tweed double-breasted blazer is almost gone and once we get the short gray fur coat it will fly out. And 3.1 Phillip Lim is a no-brainer this season; I want every single piece for myself, especially the little flowy I’m-with-the-band-style dresses and coats. And Sea made this stripe angora sweater dress that is so Kurt Cobain. Usually those grungy styles get bought up before I can blink because my friends all snatch them up.
How are shoppers buying differently now than a year ago?

IU: I used to sell cutesy, whimsical clothes really well, like little vintage-looking dresses in fun prints. Now you can’t give that stuff away. People want classic, edgy, and tough clothes. They want items they can wear for a long time and mix and match but still stand out and maybe look a little badass in.
Which new lines are you excited about?

Thakoon—I can’t believe we didn’t have it before, it seems like such a no-brainer for us! I’m especially excited about his Addition line. It’s a really affordable price point. We’re carrying the main line as well; the two go really well together. Andrea Lieberman’s line A.L.C. is new for us and I think it’s genius. Everyone talks about making basics with a twist, but she takes that concept to a whole new level. I think R13 is the next huge thing in jeans, mark my words—they remind me of the oldest, raddest pair of Levi’s you never even had. I’m sure those will sell out since the Current/Elliott always do and they’re in the same vein.

Is there anything you saw on the runway that you knew you had to have?

The Phi black oversize cardigan sweater with black fur stole will be a great piece to keep me warm and chic through fashion week. I’m also freaking out over the Phi creeper ankle boots and definitely foresee breaking one of my ankles in those. And the Rag & Bone printed blue and white mini will be my new wear-it-with-everything staple.

Why doesn’t Ms.Urbinati dress her partner, Danny Masterson. For someone who invests in a clothing store….well, enough said on that. The best he ever looked was on the spread for Paper Magazine and all the clothes were from Confederacy. Oh yeah…he looked pretty freakin cool as Hyde too! C’mon Danny, lose the mountainbeard and buy a suit that fits. You’re a good looking dude.
