Gerlan Marcel Fights The Power With Fun

You can’t blame a young designer for taking her venue where she can get it, but there was still something strange about seeing the new Gerlan Jeans collection strut a runway in the heart of corporate midtown. The skyscraper that used to be called the Bear Stearns building literally cast its shadow on the show, which saw designer Gerlan Marcel adopting a more aggressive stance, after her kaleidoscopically feel-good Peace & Love, Inc., debut last season. Blown-up cannabis, Black Power, and “breaking bricks” prints formed the basis of the collection, but these resistive symbols packed a counterintuitive punch, given that they were rendered in bubblegum colors and made up into youthful clothes such as cutout minidresses and rompers. Can social sabotage be cute? Maybe the trio of teenage bloggers seated front row had an opinion on that; Marcel, for her part, certainly saw the collection’s perkiness as part of its message. “Well, first of all, it’s about color,” she said of the collection. “But I also think that having the courage to express yourself can go hand-in-hand with having fun. I don’t think you have to take yourself seriously all the time. In fact,” she added, “being able to laugh can get you through the barriers you’re trying to break down.”
